THE ASTRONOMER

In the shadow of the temple my friend and I saw a blind man sitting alone. And my friend said, "Behold the wisest man of our land."
Then I left my friend and approached the blind man and greeted him. And we conversed.
After a while I said, "Forgive my question, but since when hast thou been blind?"
"From my birth," he answered.
Said I, "And what path of wisdom followest thou?"
Said he, "I am an astronomer."

Mommy and DaddyMommy, Daddy, are you okay?
You haven't talked at all today.
Mommy, Daddy, can't you see?
You're really starting to hurt me.

All you do is scream and fight,
and I hear it all throughout the night.
Sometimes I think my eyes will run dry,
yet whenever I do, I just continue to cry.

"She doesn't care about any of this, she'll be fine by tomorrow!"
Daddy, you don't know how much your words fill me with sorrow.
"Can't you just be civilized?! Stop acting like a child, and apologize right now!"
Mommy, please don't make this worse, or I'll run outside and hide in the snow.

Mommy, Daddy, I wish you would just stop everything and be happy again.

:thumb349463812: Phantasmagoria Contest EntryShadows are deceptive things, constantly changing and shifting. They jump and dance. They flow and, every once in a while, they pounce. A shadow attacked me once, or it tried to. Shadows can be fast but light can be faster. If not for my little beam of light the shadows might have had me that night and then there might be no story for me to tell. It was dark, there were no stars that night and the shadows were hanging in the trees, clinging to the branches. My path took me under one of those shadow covered trees and one of them jumped at me. My light kept it bay just long enough for me to get away, home safely.

Stories are light in the darkn
Catching Stars.I caught a star
and put it in my pocket
to keep it safe..

I took it home
and placed it on a shelf
in a cold dark place..

I kept it a secret
no one knew
what I was hiding..

You needed a friend
but I had nothing to offer
so I gave the star to you..

Your face lit up
I could feel the warmth
you almost felt complete..

But you let go
and the star went home
leaving you breathless
and almost knocked you off your feet..

The sky burns
the star shines bright
and I quietly watched
as you found yourself
somewhere deep within the night.

It was an odd tradition of ours: The Search.

None of my still-breathing family knew who started it or why, but they didn’t question. They simply searched without thought, seeing it a fun Christmas activity for the whole family.

The whole family, that is, except me.

What was the point? Search for the stupid key, put it in the stupid lock, and get the stupid prize, which was very stupid, if I might add. Some silly stuffed Santa Claus or new ornament to add to the tacky tree. I hadn’t won once, of course, but that didn’t add to my sour attitude towards the whole routine. I didn’t try, any The sacrifice.the ocean sings
the bluebirds fly
the shells will scream
their silent cry
when divers come
to get the pearl
you raised so long
for a little girl
five years you were working
for the final move
get it ready in time!
For the final approve
the diver
he CRACKS you
he SMACKS you
he HACKS you
and you were just shielding
your little pearl
and while you are sighing
the diver is smiling
and while you are dying
the princess is crying
'cause you had to die
for the princess' delight.
